HMS Hermes was the first purpose-designed aircraft carrier to be built (although the Japanese Hosho was the first to be commissioned). She spent much of her time on the China station and was too small and obsolescent at the start of WW2. When the Japanese moved into the Indian Ocean in 1942, she was rapidly overwhelmed by aircraft and sunk.
