The roadside Glyn Valley Tramway was required to use tram type locomotives, though the railway needed a more powerful conventional type of engine than city street tramways. Three similar locomotives were supplied by the Beyer Peacock company with the side plating enclosing the bunkers and water tanks extended to the smokebox and skirts fitted all around to enclose the wheels and drive rods. The engines were intended to run cab-foward, so the driver would have a clear view of the line ahead, though this rule was not always followed in service! Originally condensing gear was fitted so the locomotive would 'consume its own smoke' but this quickly fell into disuse and was removed after WW1.

Modelling or basing a model on the Glyn Valley line has been greatly assisted in recent years by the release of ready-to-run GVT coaches by Peco and the addition of the Glyn Valley Tramways' Baldwin locomotive in ready-to-run form to the Bachmann range. Kits for the GVT wagons are available from Dundas models, alternatively the ready-to-run wagons from Pecvo and Bachmann can be used.
