65 of these tank engines were built by the Midland Railway in the 1880s, the 0-4-4 proving a very useful type for local passenger services, including on the Stroud and Tewkesbury branches. Many, like LMS 1303, were fitted with regulator control gear for push-pull train service. While new Ivatt 2MT locomotives began to replace them after WW2 the last of the class was not withdrawn until 1956.

The Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway 0-4-0 saddle tanks enjoyed a long career and a great following among enthusiasts. These small shunting engines were ideal shunting the small goods yards around docks and heavily industrialised areas, members of the class travelling to many corners of the LMS system.

Due to the small size of the model exceptionally fine detailing isn't really practical, but the model captures the appearance of the prototype very well, incorporating fine rivet detailing and smooth running.

The largest of the 'big four' companies created by the Railways Act of 1921 the London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) was formed on 1 January 1923. The major constituent companies were the London & North Western, running the West Coast route from London to Glasgow, the Midland Railway which served the same destinations but via the highly scenic Settle and Carlisle line, plus a number of large regional companies including the Lancashire & Yorkshire.
The combined company was a vast undertaking with numerous interests other than railway operations. It was the largest company in the British Empire and the United Kingdom's second largest employer, after the Post Office, having a larger staff than the British Army! The LMS also claimed to be the largest joint stock organisation in the world. In 1938, the LMS operated 6,870 miles of railway.
