Dapol 1887 RCH Wagons RTR

The first RCH standard Private Owner wagons.

The first full standard specification for mineral wagons was issued by the RCH in 1887. This laid down the minimum standards for all aspects of wagon design, materials and construction which, following the inspection and acceptance of the wagon by one company, all the member companies agreed to accept for regular use.
Detailed model of an RCH 1887 type 3-door (side and end doors) wagon finished as Parkend Deep Navigation Collieries number 380,
The Parkend Deep Navigation Collieries Company is recorded as operating several collieries around Parkend, Forest of Dean, including Bixlade Navigation, New Fancy and Parkend Royal collieries. A substantial fleet of wagons was operated for many years marked for return empty to Lydney, from where the returning wagons could be assigned to whichever of the company's collieries needed them.

Detailed model of a 7 plank open mineral wagon built the the 1887 issued RCH specifications and finished as Elizabeth Meredith Jones, coal merchant, Blaenau Ffestiniog wagon number 3 in red oxide livery.
Elizabeth Meredith Jones was one of the small number of women coal merchants and clearly established a successful business which was still trading as coal and builders merchants in Blaenau Festiniog after WW2. In 1887 the Railways Clearing House released their first complete specifications for 'private owner' mineral wagons which would be accepted without separate inspections by all British railway companies. Many of these 'RCH 1887' wagons were painted in colourful and memorable liveries as travelling billboards for their owners. RCH specifications were also issued for other types of wagons and were updated frequently, with a full revision for mineral wagons issued in 1907, followed by a comprehensive update after the railways 'grouping' in 1923.

I started writing it as I couldn't find information on the RCH wagons in any other place, so have assembled this article from several published sources, these references being listed at the end. Please email us with any issues or other topics which need to be addressed.

The Borough Flour Mill, now more generally known as Healings Mill situated alongside the river in Tewkesbury was built in 1866 and in 1892 considered one of the most advanced mills in Britain, capable of producing 25 sacks of flour an hour. Following the arrival of the railway owner Samuel Healing was quick to invest in this alternative to river craft for the supply of coal, grain and shipping of flour.
Wagon number 5 was supplied by the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company, recorded in January 1900 by the company photographer, who helpfully provides details that the wagon was painted chocolate with white lettering shaded black. The photo (reference 2107) also shows the wagons marked as empty to Netherseal Colliery near Burton on Trent, rather than a nearby Forest of Dean colliery.
