New and detailed models of one of the most important coach types used on the Southern Railway. The non-corridor coach provided a maximum number of seats in each coach, essential for the busy suburban and commuter trains run by the Southern.

The SR built only a small number of suburban type coaches as several of the pre-grouping companies had constructed large fleets of modern coaches. However by 1934 the former London and South Western 48’ stock was reaching the end of its working life. Concious of the need to upgrade the stock with a minimal capital outlay CME Richard Maunsell developed a plan to re-use the exisiting bodyshells, overhauled, mounted on new standard 58' steel underframes and equiped with updated fittings like electric lighting.
Brake composite coaches contained accomodation for both first and third class passengers, along with a gurads' office and luggage stowage area. The lavatory compartments were arranged such that both of the first class compartments had access to a toilet, for third class passengers just the two central compartments had access to the lavatories.
This coach along with brake third R4717 formed 'set 45' a core 2-coach formation to which extra coaches were added to create the train capacity required.
