Great Western Railway 1835-1948
The Toad is a brake van, designed by and built for the Great Western Railway. Introduced by the GWR in 1894, and used from 1948 by the Western Region of British Railways, its role was a safety brake on goods trains in the West of England, the Midlands and Wales.  As with all GWR wagons and non-passenger carrying coaches, its operating code "Toad" was derived from the GWR's telegraphic code for a brake van.  The last Toad brake vans remained in service into the 1970s; phasing out occurred along with the network wide reduction in brake van duties, although many passed to the Engineers and ended their days in departmental service.  The Toad brake van is a familiar sight on preserved railways, because the large veranda is capable of carrying staff or passengers; it is also popular due to the Thomas & Friends ™ character of the same name.

Highly detailed model of the small GWR shunters trucks used to provide a place for the shunter to ride safely around goods yards, coupled to the shunting engine. The box and flat floor of the wagon provided storage space for tools and spares, including shunters poles, brake sticks, train tail lamps and spare couplings.

The Bachmann model has been designed to recreate several different designs of shunters trucks as the differences were mainly in detail design. Three versions have been displayed in Bachmanns' display cases covering designs with round turned type handrail knobs, straight angle-iron grab iron brackets and inward-angled angle-iron brackets.

This wagon is painted in the GWR goods grey livery lettered for use at Park Royal, a London depot with a number of major businesses including the Guinness brewery and bottling plant.

These vans were designed to be able to run attached to passenger trains for speedy delivery of fresh fruit. The vans were also widely used for general express parcels traffic.

These large 4-wheel vans were introduced in the late 1930's for express delivery of fresh fruit and could be conveyed by many passenger train services. Although designed as ventilated fruit vans the vents could easily be closed and the Fruit D was frequently used as a parcels and luggage van.

Fruit D wagons were large ventilated wooden bodied vans designed for the fast and efficient transportation of fruit. They were first constructed in the 1930’s for use by GWR and later in the 1950’s by BR. The vans themselves had three large double side doors for fast unloading and loading and were usually seen as part of passenger or fast goods trains. Out of season these vans were used as parcel or luggage vans. As road transport took over as the principal way of transporting fruit, fruit D vans were converted and used as permanent parcels or stores vans and remained in service in this way into the 1980’s.

Model of a GWR MEX covered fruit van, a former cattle wagon converted to a fully enclosed van for express fruit and vegetable traffic.
These useful van were fitted with vacuum train brakes, making them suitable for forwarding by fast goods and local passenger trains to ensure rapid delivery.

Following a reduction in the cattle business a number of cattle wagons were allocated to the conveyance of ale in casks (barrels).
Thoroughly cleaned and painted in the goods grey livery these wagons were lettered 'ALE' to ensure they were not inadvertently used for cattle loading!

Low-sided 4-plank open wagon in the goods grey livery of the Great Western. Supplied with sawn timber load.
The GWR built some 18,000 4 plank open wagons between 1886 and 1902 on robust iron or steel frames and fitted with modern oil lubricated axleboxes before WW1 the potential life of the 4 plank wagon fleet was assessed in the 1920s. Many wagons were still in good condition with an expected life of a further 10+ years, so were equipped with brakes on both sides to comply with the latest regulations and continued in service well into the 1930s.

The 'Iron Mink' is one of the most recognisable GWR wagon types from the end of the 19th century, with over 4,700 examples constructed between 1886 and 1901. Both underframe and body were built from iron and steel, creating a robust and long-lived wagon, with examples surviving into the 1960s. The metal construction made the design ideal for use as Gunpowder vans, wagons to the same style being used by other railway companies and private owners.
This model is finished GWR goods grey livery with 25in height lettering, as applied 1904-1920.

Several of the South Wales railway companies followed the GWR in adopting the Iron Mink for their own fleet of ventilated box vans. There were usually detail differences between the GWR wagons and those of the other operators, allowing the origins of these vans to be deduced even after the South Wales fleets were integrated with the GWRs own Iron Minks at the grouping.
This model is finished in the brown livery of the Taff Vale Railway, wagon number 5352.

A detailed model of the GWR diagram V16 vacuum brake fitted ventilated box van as converted to an insulated meat van. An order was issued in 1918 for the conversion of 300 vans to boost the fleet of meat vans during WW1, the diagram X6 vans having added insulation and the end bonnet vents sealed, though not removed to allow reconversion back to ventilated vans. For at least 285 of these conversions the extra insulation was retained as in 1922 these vans were further adapted as insulated and steam heated vans for banana traffic.
Model finished in GWR goods dark grey livery with 25in height lettering, as used in the pre-grouping era.

In May 1918 an order was issued to convert 300 GWR diagram V16 vacuum brake fitted MINK A ventilated box vans to insulated meat vans as a wartime measure. By 1922 refrigerated ships were bringing large volumes of 'green' bananas. 258 of the insulated vans were reconverted with steam warming apparatus added to ripen the bananas as they travelled to market.
This van is finished as 93249 in the GWRs dark grey goods wagon livery with 16in height lettering, as applied in 1922.

A new and highly detailed model of the RCH 1907 design open wagon. One of the most common designs used by private wagon owners these wagons frequently carried brightly coloured and floridly lettered liveries applied before WW1. Many thousands of wagons were built to this specification, the vast majority still running into WW2 and passing to British Railways at nationalisation. Each of the Rapido Trains models features prototype specific variations including end doors or no end door, buffer shank design, wheels, brake fittings and V hanger style.
Although finished in the Great Western Railway dark grey goods wagon colours this wagon is evidently on hire, carrying 'duplicate list' number 09244 to avoid confusion with the GWRs own wagon 9244 and with repair instructions on the door for the owners repair agents in Cardiff.

‘Mogo’ vans were railway vans built by Great Western Railway (GWR) in order to transport motor vehicles. Each van could only take a single vehicle which was loaded by driving through doors in the end of the van. The van additionally featured side doors so that it could be used to transport normal goods if not needed as a motor transporter. 350 wagons were built by GWR with the first appearing in 1933.

Model of a GWR cattle wagon to the GWR standard design from the early 1900s and adopted by British Railways.
Originally built in three sizes to suit the needs of the farmer the Great Western adopted a simple lockable partition device to adjust the size of a large wagon as required, building these long wheelbase wagons suitable for travelling in fast goods trains. When not needed for livestock cattle wagons were often utilised for perishable traffic including fruit & vegetables, notably broccoli from Cornwall, and fresh flowers from the Channel Islands.

The large GWR Fruit D express fruit van is returning with improved tooling. This model is painted in the GWRs' brown livery with 1934 roundel or shirtbutton logo.

These large 4-wheel vans were introduced in the late 1930's for express delivery of fresh fruit and could be conveyed by many passenger train services. Although designed as ventilated fruit vans the vents could easily be closed and the Fruit D was frequently used as a parcels and luggage van.

A highly detailed model of the RCH 1907 design 7 plank open wagon. One of the most common designs used by private wagon owners these wagons frequently carried brightly coloured and floridly lettered liveries applied before WW1. Many thousands of wagons were built to this specification, the vast majority still running into WW2 with many passing to British Railways ownership at nationalisation. Each of the Rapido Trains models features prototype specific variations including end doors or no end door, buffer shank design, wheels, brake fittings and V hanger style.

The GWR traffic department made extensive use of the gangway fitted Siphon G ventilated milk vans for carrying passenger luggage, parcels and pre-sorted mail by regular passenger trains services and by the network of dedicated parcels and mail trains. In the mid 1920s a revised design of Siphon G appeared with inside body framing, the external vertical planked body now presenting a much more pleasing appearance. Vehicles to this basic style continued to be constructed into the early British Railways era, with the last being withdrawn circa 1980 having been used as newspaper sorting and packing vans, taking the daily national papers into the West of England.
During WW2 a number of Siphon G vehicles were modified for service in ambulance trains, complete with air brake systems for service in Europe. This model is finished as ward car A5 which formed part of Ambulance Train 32 painted in olive green with large red cross logos.
