Avonmouth was a major grain port for many years and the GWR constructed a small fleet of grain covered hopper wagons coded GRANO to ensure a good supply of wagons would be on hand when the next grain ship docked. In addition to the regular distribution from the large dockside granary stores to the many smaller mills around the South West these wagons would be busy during the harvest season collecting grain from country granaries.
