HMS Furious was unusual during WW2 in that her camouflage schemes always extended over the decks. This was done to overcome the problem of soot stains at the stern where the boiler flues vented through the flight deck. Dark markings were applied on the decks forward so that it seemed from the air that the deck plan did not resemble an aircraft carrier at all. The deck pattern began with the camouflage design from 1941 and continued through the 1942/43 design to the final 1944 design virually unchanged.
