Admiral Graf Spee, commissioned in 1936, was faster than a battleship, more powerful and more heavily armoured than a cruiser and the first German warship to be fitted with search radar. Speed could reach up to 28.5 knots and main battery consisted of six 11" (28cm) SK C/28 guns mounted in two triple turrets. She made five deployments to Spanish waters during the time of the Spanish Civil War. When WW2 broke out in 1939, the ship began a cruise as a raider in the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans with orders to sink British merchant ships while avoiding combat with superior forces, thus threatening vital allied supply lines and drawing British naval units off stations in other parts of the world. Admiral Graf Spee sank nine Allied merchant ships (totalling 50,089 tons) but was deliberately scuttled off Montevideo soon after the Battle of the River Plate.
