Commissioned on the 10th December 1943, sponsored by the mother of Ensign John C, England who had been killed on the battleship Oklahoma at Pearl Harbour, USS England was equipped with the new British hedgehog anti-submarine mortar system which the ship used to great effect in removing 6 submarines from the Japanese order of battle within 12 days.
Usual good Trumpeter mouldings with 177 parts to produce a model that is 266 mm long.
John Charles England was a radio man that served prior to WWII on the USS Oklahoma. During the attack on Pearl Harbour in Dec 1941, a Japanese torpedo hit the Oklahoma. Ensign England managed to escape to the deck of his ship, only to realize his colleagues were trapped in the radio room. After rescuing three, he returned yet again to rescue a fourth but was never seen again. Ensign England was a few days shy of his 21st birthday and awaiting the arrival the following week of his wife and 3-week-old daughter who he had not yet seen.
USS England went on to serve with distinction in the Pacific and achieved unparalleled and unequalled success by sinking six submarines in 12 days in May 1944.
