Ensign England managed to escape to the deck of his ship, only to realize his colleagues were trapped in the radio room. After rescuing three, he returned yet again to rescue a fourth but was never seen again. Ensign England was a few days shy of his 21st birthday and awaiting the arrival the following week of his wife and 3-week-old daughter who he had not yet seen.
USS England went on to serve with distinction in the Pacific and achieved unparalleled and unequalled success by sinking six submarines in 12 days in May 1944.
