Shimane Maru was intended to be an aircraft transport using an oil tanker hull but was fitted out as an escort carrier. She was never used as such because of the shortage of aircraft and plans were afoot to use her as a freighter when she was sunk in July 1945. A sister-ship, Otakisan Maru was incomplete at the end of the war.
