Japanese to WW2

The Imperial Japanese Navy. The other Royal Navy and like Great Britain an island nation, Japan had fought naval actions against the Russians and alongside the Western allies in WW1. Modern well-equipped ships supported the worlds mightiest battleships and carriers by the late 1930s, but the island could not match the resources of the United States.

Naka is a second-hand, 1'1250 scale, waterline, metal model of the Japanese light cruiser in WW2. The model is by Neptun, and the catalogue number is 1244A.  This model is in very good original condition, see photograph. All Navis Neptun models have been out of production for the last five years.

This was the first Japanese cruiser to be built with the distinctive clipper bow. Sistership Jintsu gained one after a collision but Sendai retained the original bow shape until she was sunk (see Neptun 1244). The model represents the condition of both Naka and Jintsu during WW2.

Atago is a 1/1200 scale, waterline metal model of the Japanese heavy cruiser in 1944. This model has been made from a Superior Models Inc. kit of the Takao/Chokai so as to get to the best fit for Atago shortly before she was sunk in 1944. Compared to her sisterships (Maya, Takao and Chokai) Ataago had the aircraft handling arrangements removed and the mainmast moved forward to abaft of the second funnel (see photograph).

The decks have been painted to represent the tan linoleum used to save weight over wood on the main decks of Japanese "Treaty" cruisers.
