Most sailing ships achieved fameï¿½through sea battles but some gained it through exploration. On 27th December 1831, HMS Beagle, a barque launched in 1820, sailed from Devonport, England on a five year expedition round the globe. At the invitation of the captain and naturalist Robert Fitzroy, the young natural scientist Charles Darwin was also on board. The observations made by him onï¿½the origin of species, during the voyage, formed the basis of the Darwin's theory, a milestone in the scientific study of evolution. The historic voyageï¿½via Brazil, Chile,ï¿½Galapagos Islands, Tahiti, New Zealand and roundï¿½the Cape of Good Hopeï¿½ended backï¿½in England on 2nd October 1836. Many speciesï¿½were brought backï¿½asï¿½examples of exotic flora and fauna.
