Four ships of the Agano-class entered service in WW2, Agano, Noshiro, Yahagi and Sakawa. As with all the other small light cruisers of Japan, they were designed to operate with destroyer flotillas and were developments of the British scout cruiser idea. All but Sakawa were sunk during WW2, Yahagi during the sortie of battleship Yamato to defend Okinawa in 1945. Sakawa was expended in the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in 1946.
