Hiei was said to be the Emperor's favourite warship and was the first capital ship to have been built entirely in Japan. She was reduced to a training ship under the terms of the Washington Treaty but re-activated after it expired. The bridge work was used as a prototype for the Yamato-class battleships. She was sunk off Savo Island in 1942.
