In the late 1970s, the U.S. Armed Forces sought to replace its fragmented and outdated fleet of military vehicles with a unified, multi-role platform capable of both personnel transport and weapons carriage. Three companies competed in the final stage: AM General, Chrysler Defense, and Teledyne Continental. AM General was selected as the winner, and the first production vehicle rolled off the line on January 2, 1985. The Humvee was built on a steel frame with a lightweight, corrosion-resistant aluminium body. Its design placed drivetrain components high in the chassis, resulting in a flat underbody that improved off-road capability. It saw its combat debut in Panama in 1989 and gained worldwide recognition during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 for its reliability in harsh conditions. Combat experience later revealed the vulnerability of unarmoured vehicles to small-arms fire in urban environments, leading to the development of armoured variants. The M1025A2 is an armoured weapons carrier within the A2 modernization series of the HMMWV family, designed to improve mobility, reliability, and field maintainability. It features a sloped rear body section and a rigid roof-mounted weapon station. Protection is provided by a basic armour kit combining steel, Kevlar, and polycarbonate glass. The vehicle serves as a mobile platform for the M2HB heavy machine gun, Mk19 grenade launcher, and Anti-Tank Missile TOW, and is used for patrol, convoy escort, reconnaissance, and military police duties.
