226.Aufklarungsabteilungen (armored Reconnaissance detachment) belonged to 116.Panzer-Division that was known as the Windhund Divisonen (Greyhound Division). 116.Pz Div. was formed in March 1944 and sent to the Pas-de-Calais. From August 7th – 13th the 116.Pz Div. was involved in Operation Luttich, a failed German counteroffensive that saw German forces being encircled in the Falaise Pocket. From August 12th – 21st the Germans were on the defensive and eventually some did escape with heavy losses. By August 21st the 116.Pz Div. only had 600 men and 12 tanks left.
