British rail established a technical centre at Derby for the scientificĀ investigation of many aspects of interest to the railway industry. The centre operated a number of special test trains looking into metallurgy (eg rail wear), vehicle dynamics and the dynamics of the wheel/rail interface, becoming a world-renown centre of excellence for scientific research. To power these test trains the RTC adopted several locomotives, including class 24 locomotive 24061, which received service stock number 97201 and the name Experiment along with the RTCs' blue and red paint scheme.
Retired in 1988, the sole remaining class 24 in BR service, 97201 was purchased for preservation.
