Brush Traction developed the class 57 locomotive with Freighliner, giving class 47s locomotive bodyshells an extensive overhaul and equipping them with the highly regarded EMD 645 engine, allied to updated electrical systems. Virgin Trains selected the class 57 design for service in the 'Thunderbird' rescue locomotive role for the new Pendolino electric trains being built for the West Coast route, ordering 16 locomotives and licencing the names of the Thunderbirds characters to identify the fleet. These class 57/3 locomotives were equipped with the couplers used on the Pendolino trains in addition to standard drawgear and had been intended to haul Pendolino trains to traditional West Coast destinations away from the main electrified route.
This detailed model from the Graham Farish N gauge range is powered by a centrally mounted motor driving all six axles. Etched panels allow the stainless steel radiator grilles to be nicely recreated.
