Detailed model of the GWR 517 class 0-4-2T, recreating the class after 1900 with lengthened wheelbase, choice of open or enclosed cab and original or extended 'Swindon' style bunker. Designed by George Armstrong and built at Wolverhampton between 1868 and 1885 these engines were intended for branchline and local passenger service all across the GWR system. Many were modified for auto train pull-push working and proved so successful that the Collett 48xx class built in the 1930s to replace them was little more than a modernised version, with newer 517 boilers being modified to fit the new engines.
Model of GWR number 1159 finished in the GWRs 1906-1934 livery style of plain green lettered GREAT WESTERN. We anticipate this will be per the photo of the final appearance of the 517 class engines with the enlarged Swindon style bunker, enclosed cab and number plate relocated to the cab side, freeing the tank sides for lettering. DCC sound factory fitted.

The 517 Class were small 0-4-2T tank engines designed by George Armstrong for local passenger work on the Great Western Railway. 144 were built at Wolverhampton Works in 13 lots and were outshopped between 1868 and 1885.
During the late 1880’s and early 1890’s most had their wheelbases lengthened to 15 foot 6 inches and from 1904 onward several were converted to auto train working which scattered them over the system. When Charles Collett became CME, during 1924 he widened the tanks and provided a new cab with extended bunker which became the Swindon rebuild and outwardly looked very similar to the later 48xx class he designed in 1932.
The last of the class, number 1159, was withdrawn in August 1947 just missing out on nationalisation. All members of the class were disposed of with none making it into preservation.

Dapol will be making models having the later modified chassis with longer wheel base and side tanks replacing the saddle tanks including open and closed cab versions.

Technical Specification

  • DCC fitting with slide-in PCB offers simple ‘tool-free’ installation of a NEXT-18 DCC decoder and a ’no-solder’ speaker connection. This board slides through the smoke box door and connects directly to the locomotive mother board.
