Often factory buildings grew or expanded over a road or railway track which could not easily be relocated. To make communication between the two sections of the factory easier covered walkway bridges were often installed at a height clear of traffic below. In addition to pedestrians these bridges might also carry conveyors or pipes to transfer products between the buildings.
