When the Weston, Clevedon and Portishead Railway closed in 1940 due to the loss of tourist trade following the outbreak of WW2 the company owed a considerable sum to the GWR. In lieu of payment the GWR agreed to accept the light railways' rolling stock, the most useful of which were the two ex-LB&SCR Terrier locomotives.
These two engines had been purchased as these were about the largest and heaviest engines the lines' wooden trestles could cope with and, as the GWR possessed no similarly light-weight locomotives, the Terriers were used on the demolition trains, recovering rail for scrap. Both engines provided vaulable service to the GWR and War Department throughout WW2, shunting in the many temporary wartime depots around Bristol. GWR number 5, built as LB&SCR 43 Gipsy Hill, retained her Portishead nameplates until withdrawn under British Railways ownership in 1954, having worked from Bristol (St Philips Marsh), and Taunton (around the goods yards, concrete depot and probably the Bridgewater dock line) and visiting the works at Newton Abbot.
