These diagram N 57feet length auto trailer coaches served on many Great Western routes where push-pull or auto train working was used, from country branch lines to main line stopping services. Gas lighting was retained on these coaches as many local services did not attain the speeds needed for a dynamo to sufficiently charge batteries.
Running well into the British Railways era the first diagram N autocoach was withdrawn from service in 1956, with the last withdrawn in November 1957. Number 38 has been preserved and can be seen to the Telford Steam Railway.
