The British Rail Class 33 is a class of Bo-Bo diesel-electric locomotive built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company (BRCW) for the Southern Region of BR between 1960 and 1962.
The class 33 was based on the BRCW type 2 design (BR classes 26 & 27), modified to meet the Southern Regions' specification of electric train heating supply. Eliminating the steam train heating boiler allowed the longer 8-cylinder 1,550bhp Sulzer engine to be fitted with extra horsepower available for train heating supply, or for traction use when hauling freight trains. 98 locomotives were originally built, numbered D6500 - D6597. The class was affectionately known as ‘Cromptons’ after the manufacturer of the electrical equipment installed. The class has proven highly adaptable, with examples being fitted with Southern EMU type control jumpers for hauling 4-car trailer sets of EMU-type stock over non-electrified routes in 'push-pull' mode. The class travelled widely, regularly reaching Crewe and Manchester with passenger services from South Wales and Doncaster with cement trains. Although only a small number remain registered with Network Rail for mainline service 26 examples of the class survive preservation.

The Dapol Class 33 features:

  • Detailed body with etched grills and separately fitted handrails
  • RP25.72 darkened wheels with pin point bearings
  • 5 pole Super creep motor with huge pulling power and incredible slow
  • running speed
  • All wheel drive and pick up
  • Independently controllable directional lighting
  • Dapol’s low friction mechanism for efficient quiet running
  • Heavy split frame chassis for excellent running and haulage qualities
