The Leicester Tramways Company started operating in December 1874 but it was later taken over by Leicester Corporation Transport in July 1901. In July 1924 the first motor buses entered service, gradually replacing the trams with the last running in November 1949. In 1980 LCT received 36-39, (FUT 36-39V), MCW DR102/14 integral double deckers, in contrast with the fleet majority of Dennis Dominators. They didn’t last long, being sold to Ensign by Leicester CityBus Ltd.
In 1983 Leicester Corporation Transport was rebranded as Leicester CityBus and in 1986 Leicester CityBus was transferred to a separate legal entity. Leicester City Council then sold its shareholding in Leicester CityBus to GRT Group in late 1993. After GRT Group merged with Badgerline to form FirstBus in April 1995 the operation was rebranded as First Leicester.
