Coastlines 1/1250 CL-SY01 Turbinia Charles Parsons Famous Steam Turbine Yacht
Detailed 1:1250 scale model of Charles Parsons steam turbine powered yacht Turbinia. Built in 1894 to test and prove the viability of steam turbine propulsion she was easily the fastest ship in the world at that time. The 2,000bhp yacht Turbinia dashed through the lines of warships at Spithead, proving the speed and power of a turbine driven ship before the assembled admirals of the Royal Navy.
Not only did Parsons design the first effective steam turbine, he designed a ship to prove it! Turbinia dashed through the lines of warships at Spithead Review and the picket boats couldn't stop her or catch her. Parsons not only had to sol;ve technical problems to produce a practical working steam turbine but high speed turbines produced cavitation at the propellers and he had to solve that problem to get the power of the turbine converted to efficient propulsion. Turbinia had multiple propellers per shaft butlarger diameter propellers of modified shape, simplified turbine blade design and geared shafts soon followed.
