Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse was fitted with strengthened areas on deck where guns could be mounted to allow her to operate as an Armed Merchant Cruiser if or when war was declared. In 1914, she was fitted with guns removed from a colonial gunboat and embarked on a raiding cruise.Although she could outrun most British warships, it took large quantities of coal which were simply unobtainable and she was cornered and sunk by the protected cruiser, HMS Highflyer in the Rio de Oro off Spanish West Africa.
