EFE Rail N Gauge E87539 BR Mermaid Side Tipping Ballast Wagon Departmental Gulf red
This side tipping ballast wagon design was produced by Metro-Cammell in the 1930s, with the ability to discharge the load to either side of the track. A batch being purchased by the GWR, typically they are used for base ballasting before relaying of a parallel track and spoil removal to a dump site.
The type was adopted as a standard design by the British Railways civil engineer in the 1950s with the addition of vacuum train brakes to the majority of the BR built wagons and assigned code name 'Mermaid'.
This model is finished in the departmental gulf red livery.
This seems to be a less common livery, though due to engineering wagons usually being very dirty it might be difficult to tell the dirty red from black or olive!
