Cadburys had set up their chocolate manufacturing plant at Bourneville, Birmingham due to the good connections by railway and canal with ports to the south importing cocoa and collieries to the north to supply coal for the boilers. The company operated an internal railway network and owned a number of wagons to ensure a steady supply of coal was available without needing to pay demurrage fees for wagons held awaiting unloading.
