The Railway Heritage Committee is a central body responsible for discovering and designating historic objects from the national railway network. This includes any object of historical interest, from perhaps a pre-grouping company drain cover to station fittings, signals, rolling stock, locomotives and buildings. Designated objects cannot be removed, altered or disposed of except with the committee's agreement, resulting in many interesting items being offered to museums and preservation centres for display or re-use.
