Construction of Zara began on July 4, 1929, in the the Otto Group La Spezia shipyard, launched on April 27, 1930 and completed by October 20, 1931 after which shewas incorporated into the the first Italian cruiser detachment. After Italy joined the war 1940 the ship covered convoys to North Africa and in September intercepted British troop convoys between the island of Malta and Alexandria. On November 27 Zara was struck and damaged but on March 29th 1941 she was sunk at the Battle of Cape Matapan by the British Royal Navy battleship HMS Warspite. HMS Valiant and HMS Barham were also present.
