Designed for suburban passenger service the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railways' 'radial' 2-4-2 tank engines, despite their small size, proved quite capable of hauling some express trains and particularly important 'business' trains. These commuter trains serving areas containing some of the more prestigeous residences were considered so important that on grouping several of these tank engines received the LMS crimson livery, more usually associated with larger engines.
