These lifeboats were not self-righting when new but in the 1970s some were re-built with an inflatable bag providing self righting on one occasion only (Solomon Browne was one of these modified boats). Later still, a handful were rebuilt with bigger sealed cabins (not modelled here) to always right the boat. The heavy mast was the engine exhaust.
