This is a detailed model of 4965 Rood Ashton Hall, one of the preserved members of the 4900 Hall class which has returned to mainline operation. The Class 4900, Hall Class locomotives were a C. B. Collett designed Mixed Traffic locomotive and were inspired by the earlier designed Saint Class.
The original batch of 100 'Hall' locomotives were built between the years 1928 and 1930 with a further batch being constructed from 1931 through to 1940. This additional 100 had numbers running from 5900 - 5999. An additional quantity of 59 'Hall' locomotives were built from 1940 until 1943 and carried the numbers of 6900 - 6958.
4965 Rood Ashton Hall was completed in November 1929, going new to Wolverhampton Oxley shed. By August 1950 4965 had moved to Penzance, being transferred to Didcot (now home of the Great Western Society collection) by March 1959. Withdrawn from Didcot in March 1962 number 4965 was officially scrapped at Swindon works. However this was not the end! A group based at the GWR Tysley shed in Birmigham purchased 4983 Albert Hall from the Barry scrapyard. During restoration is became clear that the frames at least belonged not to 4983, but to 4965. Swindon works staff 'rumours' suggest that 4965 had arrived at Swindon needing a new boiler, but was otherwise in good mechanical order. At the same time the recently overhauled 4983 was proving to be a 'problem' engine. It seems likely that 4983s' problems were cured by using 4965s good chassis! Today the preserved locomotive carries the name and number plates for both 4965 Rood Ashton Hall and 4983 Albert Hall. Class: 4900 Designer: C.B.
