G J Churchwards' smaller 45xx series 2-6-2 tank engine design became the classic Great Western branchline engine. These small engines and economical were very powerful for their size, rated 3MT by British Railways, ran equally freely in either direction and with a reserve of power showed remarkable acceleration.
The engines proved successful in a range of duties, from branch line to suburban passenger service and more engines were built under Colletts' administration with taller tanks for added water capacity. These tanks featured sloping front ends to maintain visibility for the crew and formed the 4575 'sub class'.
