Released from English Electric Vulcan Foundry in November 1962 as D6767 the locomotive was sent new to Thornaby depot, later moving to Gateshead before returning to Thornaby, now fitted with dual brakes, by 1974 when the TOPS number 37067 was applied. The locomotive travelled widely, being recorded in south Wales, the South West of England and East Anglia.

In 1986 the locomotive was transferred to Cardiff Canton shed, ready for its' new duties. The locomotive itself however entered Crewe works and may not have reached its' new shed until energing again, refurbished and ballasted, as number 37703 in January 1987.

Moving first to the Mainline freight shadow franchise company 37703 passed to EWS, joining the companys' large pool of class 37s.

Modelled Period
Painted in the EWS maroon and gold livery 37703 worked all across the rail network in the late 1990s, including visits to Cornwall on china clay trains.
End of modelled period.

In mid 2000 37703 was allocated to EWS special projects and officially stored in servicable condition. The special project was a short-term requirement for locomotives in Spain and, numbered L023, 37703 left for Spain in May 2001. The locomotive was still in use on contract hire in Spain during 2004.
