The class 57/3 locomotives were converted for Virgin Trains West Coast using class 47 bodyshells re-engined with EMD 12 cylinder 645 series prime movers and fitted with Dellner couplings for hauling Pendolino trans. As the reliability of the Pendolino fleet improved and Voyager trains became available for services to destinations away from the electrified routes Virgin Trains sold their locomotives to other operators.
