The 0-6-0 tank engine originally designed for shunting work proved to be a very useful locomotive type, quite capable of running at suitable speeds for local and branchline service with both goods and passenger trains. The Midland Railway slowly improved their 0-6-0 tank engine design to create more powerful versions, culminating in the Johnson 2441 class of 1899. A revision of this design by Fowler with Belpaire firebox was adopted as the LMS standard shunting and local service engine. 422 LMS 'Jinty' 3F tanks were built between 1924 and 1931, including the subject for this model Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway number 23 which carried the Prussian blue livery
The Jinty was found all over the LMS system, working as station pilots, shunting in yards, hauling local and suburban passenger trains and delivering the local pick-up goods. Many branchlines were served by 3F tanks as the regular resident engine, or working in with the branch goods.
This Dapol model is a highly detailed scale replica of the Jinty with careful tooling design allowing for many of the detail differences between individual locomotives to me replicated. A tooling test model was displayed at Alexandra Palace in March and decoration master sheets were released in May with the projected production models becoming available in the autumn of 2017.
The drive mechanism follows the successful pattern of the Dapol Terrier and 08 with a 5-pole motor and flywheel driving a gear train designed to give good low speed control for shunting and a realistically modest top speed.
