Hornbys' Railroad range contains many of the robust and reliable Hornby trains, ideal for young railway enthusiasts. Traditional Hornby play value at a reasonable price.

Many of the large locomotives have similar specifications to the latest Hornby engines, but are not fitted with the many fine details found on the collectors models. Ideal for handling by young modellers and as a starting point for super-detailing projects.

Hornby Railroad range model of BR standard class 8 4-6-2 pacific locomotive 71000 Duke of Gloucester.
Unboxed model split from Gloucester City Pullman Train Set. Supplied in polystyrene holder with basic detail pack. No retail packaging.

Following whithdrawal 71000 was sent to the South Wales scrapyard of Woodham brothers, where a steady flow of goods wagons for scrapping saw the steam locomotives stored. Dubbed 'Project Impossible' due to the removal of two of the locomotives cylinders, one of which was used as a museum display showing the Caprotti valve gear, new cylinders were cast and 71000 has returned to operation on the mainline.
This model is produced with basic, moulded detailing, designed for handling on layouts and suitable for younger modellers. The Railroad range locomotives feature the same drive mechanisms and bodyshells as the collectors versions and represent and excellent base for custom and super-detailing projects to recreate the 'Duke' at a specific date.

Hornby OO Railroad BR 92023 Class 9F 2-10-0 with Franco Crosti Boiler Black Late Crest Railroad Range R3274
RailRoad BR 2-10-0 Franco Crosti Boiler 9F Class - R3274

A 2015 model in the  Hornby Railroad range of the BR class 9F 2-10-0 heavy freight locomotive fitted with Crosti boiler and feed-water preheating. This was a very unusual boiler type on a British locomotive and it makes an impressive model.

In 1955 BR had experimentally built 10 9F locomotives which incorporated Franco Crosti boilers and although all were later converted to conventional boilers the actual appearance of the locomotive at the time was both striking and workmanlike. The Franco Crosti Class 9F an ideal model to be at the head of a full train of heavy freight wagons.

With a tractive effort of 39670 lbs and 5' driving wheels all 9F's were powerful and capable engines. As to the Crosti's, the hoped for improvement in steam production and hence performance didn't quite meet expectations and no more were produced. Adapted in various ways, the ten produced remained an interesting sub section of the 9F class.

Hornby OO Railroad BR 92027 Class 9F 2-10-0 with Franco Crosti Boiler Black Early Emblem Railroad Range R3273
RailRoad BR 2-10-0 Franco Crosti Boiler 9F Class - R3273

A long awaited model R3273, part of Hornby's Railroad range, of the BR class 9F 2-10-0 heavy freight locomotive fitted with a Crosti boiler and feed-water preheating.

In 1955 BR experimentally built 10 9F locomotives which incorporated Franco Crosti boilers, resulting in an engine that was both striking and workmanlike in appearance. The Crosti's were about 4 tons heavier than standard 9F's and initially allocated to 15A Wellingborough for use mainly on heavy midland's coal traffic. At time they ventured far and wide.

With a tractive effort of 39670 lbs and 5' driving wheels all the 9F's were powerful and capable engines. As to the Crosti's, the hoped for improvement in steam production and hence performance didn't quite meet expectations and no more were produced. Adapted in various ways, the ten produced remained an interesting sub section of the 9F class. Of the latter 92220 Evening Star was the last steam engine to be built by British Railways.
