This model represents one of the class 47s fitted with an extra generator to supply electric power to the train, known as ETH (Electric Train Heating) or more correctly ETS (Electric Train Supply). The Bachmann model is powered by a centrally mounted motor with drive to all six axles in both bogies, combined with the diecast chassis block gives plenty of power for hauling scale length trains. The bodyshell has been modelled from full-size locomotives and tooling design allows for many visible detail differences between locomotives to be recreated.

Completed as D1663 and accepted into traffic on the 20th of February 1965 this Crewe-built locomotive was allocated to the Western region and sent to Swansea Landore shed. Intended for both passenger and goods service alongside the Western regions' hydraulic fleet many of the class 47 locomotives were named. At Paddington station on the 8th of May 1965 D1663 was named SIR DANIEL GOOCH (all capitals style) after the the famous locomotive engineer, MP and chairman of the Great Western Railway by Sidney Green, General Secretary of the National Union of Railwaymen.
The locomotive remained allocated to the Western region until 1990, working from several South Wales sheds, London Old Oak Common and Bristol Bath Road. Renumbered with TOPS class 47 number 47079 in February 1974 the locomotive was selected for fitting with electric train heating supply in the 1980s, the work being completed in January 1985 and a new number 47628 was applied.

1985 marked the 150th anniversary of the formation of the Great Western Railway and, newly overhauled and already carrying the name of a former engineer and chairman of the GWR, 47628 was repainted into Great Western green livery with new brass name and number plates as part of the GWR 150 celebrations. These plates were carried until 1989, when the locomotive was repainted into unbranded InterCity mainline livery shortly before the locomotive was transferred to the parcels business sector and was reallocated to Crewe diesel depot.
By 1999 the 47628 was withdrawn and stored, though was reinstated for service with Fragonset in 2001 before final withdraw and scrapping in 2006.
