Pre-WW1 Ocean Liners

Modelled by Navis, one of only a handful of merchant ships by the company famous for it's superdetailed warship models.

Aquitania is a second-hand, 1/1250 scale, metal, waterline model of Aquitania as turned out in 1914. This model is in excellent original condition but with decks painted whiteas were all early production models, see photograph.

Aquitania was completed to provide Cunard with a three ship transatlantic service with Lusitania and Mauretania before the outbreak of the Great War. She survived two world wars and years of Atlantic crossings to become the last of the 4-funnelled liners to be scrapped in 1949.

A 1/1250 scale metal, fully assembled and painted model of SS Arabia. P & O's handsome two funnel Arabia was built at Greenock by Caird & Co in 1898, especially for the route to India. The ship had a relatively short career, being sunk by torpedo in 1916.

The RMS Titanic by Claytown is unusual in that it is one of the very few models that have been mass produced as a waterline model in 1/1200 scale because most small scale models of Titanic have been made in 1/1250 scale. The models were made in china for Claytown of Davie, Florida and not many were imported into the UK. This particular model is second-hand and replacement masts and derricks have been fitted , a white trim line has been applied to separate the black hull from the red of the waterline, the funnels have been repainted in a lighter shade of buff and a matt varnish has bee applied.

Vaterland is a 1/1250 scale model of the NDL liner in 1914 cast in polyurethane resin and fully painted in England by Coastlines Models CL-M402 (see photograph)

A 1/1250 scale metal model of Imperator by CM Miniaturen. Imperator was introduced on the transatlantic trade by Hamburg America line to be the largest and most luxurious liner in the world andwas fitted with a large figurehead of an imperial eagle on the bow as modelled here.

A 1/1250 scale metal model of the Vaterland of 1914 by CM Miniaturen. Vaterland was the second of the three Imperator class large liners built for Hamburg America line. During WW1 she was laid up in the USA but when the US joined the Allies she was requisitioned to become the American troopship Leviathan.

Carlo Marquardt's 1/1250 scale version of RMS Titanic, the most famous passenger liner in history, CM148.

CM models are finely cast in metal but the decks are not painted separately from the rest of the casting and in this case they are left white. This usually means that the models are cheaper than those of competitors in this specialist ship model market.

Tragically sunk with great loss of life off the Old Head of Kinsale in 1915.

Newly re-released for 2014! Built at Fairfields yard on the Clyde for the Australia run, she was taken over as a troopship in WW1 and sunk off Sardinia in May 1918 by UB-52 whilst returning empty from Marseilles to Alexandria.

A 1/1250 scale model of the passenger tender Nomadic, built in 1911 to service the Olympic class liners during calls at the French port of Cherbourg, before their crossing of the Atlantic to New York. She was built at Harland  & Wolff's yard at Belfast and the tender has recently been returned there, re-fitted and opened to the public as a museum ship in a dock opposite the stunning new Titanic museum.

Pressed into military service as a fast minelayer at the start of WW1, this was the ship which sank HMS Audacious!

Albatros City of Paris Inman Line Liner as in 1889 Waterline Model

Philadelphia  (ex-City of Paris of 1893) of the America Line as in 1899 is a 1/1250 scale wterline model designed, cast in metal, assembled and painted by Albatros SM AL-C1A. This model was originally made by the very fine model maker Colonia but the present model has been completed with wood-coloured decks. Overall length of model including bowsprit is 14.5cm.

A 1/1250 scale waterline model of SS Bremen (III) of 1896, later renamed Constantinople by CM Miniaturen CM 363.

RMS Ceramic, a waterline 1/1250 scale model of a White Star liner built for the ASustralia Service in 1913. Ceramic served as a troopship during WW1 but returned to the Australia Service and included visits to New Zealand between the wars. She was called up again as a troopship in WW2 and was sunk in mid-Atlantic in December 1942 by U555. There was only one survivor who was rescued from an up-turned lifeboat by another U-boat.
