The fork-lift truck was developed during WW1, but only came into widespread industrial use after WW2. During the 1950s a number of wagons were developed for use with palletised mechanical loading, these pallet vans with wide sliding doors proving the most effective design, each door allowing clear access to half of the floor area.

Designed for running in high speed goods and parcels trains to quickly deliver fresh North Sea fish to London markets these vans were later utilised for express parcels services. They were well liked for these services as the small vans could be loaded for one destination and easily secured.

The 16 ton steel body mineral wagon was built by a number of private wagon builders starting in the mid-1930s. A number of private owners with large wagon fleets began to purchase the more robust steel wagons, with bulk orders being placed by the Ministry of War Transport during WW2 to increase the capacity of the wagon fleet and replace life-expired ex-private owner wagons which were beyond economic repair.

This kit models one of the private owner grain covered hopper wagons introduced in the 1960s. Initially used in connection with the Scottish whiskey distilleries the wagons carried a distinctive blue livery and whiskey brand advertising placards, leading the the term 'whiskey blues' being used to describe them. Later the wagons were used in general service for carrying bulk powder loads.
