Navis Neptun 1/1250 1027 HSK5(II) Hansa, German WW2 Auxiliary Cruiser
A 1/1250 scale waterline model of Hansa by Neptun number 1027.The model has the monogram "HF" underneath, meaning that it was mastered by Helge Fischer, one of the very best model makers in this scale. Building in Copenhagen for the Glen Line, Hansa never broke out of German waters after being taken over. Known to the Kriegsmarine as HSK5 (II), the first ship so designated having been Pinguin. After being repatriated in 1945 she finally became the Glengarry, the originally intended name.

A 1/1250 scale metal model of Shinano Maru in the AMC guise in which she came across the Russian Baltic fleet after it's trek around the world prior to the battle of Tsushima in 1905. Patrolling off Tsushima as a mist cleared in the morning sun, Shinano Maru found herself surrounded and was lucky to escape without being fired upon. The Russians went on to savage defeat in the Straits of Tsushima.She is recorded 1923 sold to Kinkai Yusen K.K., Tokyo, 1938 renamed Sinano Maru, 1951 scrapped Japan.

Launched on the Clyde, Scotland, in 1920 as the Tyrrhenia for the Anchor Line, a subsidiary of Cunard, the 16,243ton, 578foot (176m) liner could carry 2,200 passengers in three classes and was built by William Beardmore and Company of Glasgow, Scotland. She made her maiden voyage on 19 June 1922.Renamed Lancastria in 1924, after American passengers complained that they could not properly pronounce Tyrrhenia, she sailed scheduled routes from Liverpool to New York until 1932, and was then used as a cruise ship in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. With the outbreak of the Second World War, she carried cargo before being requisitioned in April 1940 as a troopship, becoming the HMT Lancastria. She was first used to assist in the evacuation of troops from Norway.

Voltaire met her end on 4th April 1941 in an encounter with the German raider Thor between Trinidad and Freetown, being out ranged and outgunned. 75 lives were lost. The size of the merchant cruisers worked against them, as with little armour, it made them easy targets.

A 1/1250 scale model of the KMS Memelland, a Germany armed navy tanker during WW2. The ship was built in 1936 for the Dutch shipping firm of La Corona, a subsidiary of Anglo-Saxon petroleum company and was commandeered for the German Kriegsmarine when Germany invaded Holland in 1940. The Memelland was in Kiel when WW2 ended in May 1945.

A 1/1200 scale second-hand metal model of Admiral Scheer by Superior Models 204G. The model is painted overall blue with wood effect painted decks and is in excellent condition, see photograph. Provenance of this model suggests to us that it is a Clydeside casting made under licence from Superior Models in the 1980s.

In the first years of WW2 the German Kriegsmarine deployed a number of Auxiliary Cruisers, merchant ships armed with hidden naval guns, to interdict and disrupt British and allied trade around the globe. Each was a conversion and had at least five identities, the original merchant name, the prefix HSK and number given when conversion started, a Schiff number used for signal purposes and her actual name as a raider, chosen by the captain.
Short of escort at the start of the war the Royal Navy also added older naval weapons to larger British merchant ships, these Armed Merchant Cruisers providing conveys with some limited defensive firepower. Several merchant cruisers valiantly engaged far more powerful enemy warships in order to disrupt attacks on conveys and were lost in the process.
