LNER Coaches & Wagons

LMER & constituents Eras 2-3

This four wheeled coach is a representation of the many which served on the Great Northern Railway (GNR) in the late 19th and early 20th century. Four wheeled coaches proved especially good at branch line work where their small size enabled the traversing of tight radius curves, whilst lower passenger numbers meant their small size was more acceptable and enabled trains to be hauled by smaller engines.

This GNR coach is modelled as having step boards to enable access at stations with low platforms and gas lighting.

The GWR iron bodied 'Iron Mink' vans made an excellent base for duties where a strong and secure wagon was required. Many vans of similar design were built by other railways and for private owners by railway wagon works. Regular uses were for flour and cement, which needed to be kept dry during transport and for the secure conveyance of explosives, classified as Gunpowder Vans. Gunpowder vans in particular were frequently given a distinct livery to alert railway staff to the hazardous cargo.
This Rapido Trains Iron Mink model is finished in the bright red gunpowder van livery of the North British Railway, wagon number 65410.

Oxford Rail OR76MW6001B OO Gauge LNER 6 Plank Open Merchandise Wagon LNER Grey

The LNER constructed a slightly larger 6 plank bodied open wagon for general merchandise service, in place of the 5 plank body favoured by LMS and GWR companies. The LNER design used the RCH wood chassis far longer than the other companies who changed to the stronger steel frame design, resulting in the LNER wagons being quite easily identifyable. This model from Oxford Rail provides modellers with a good and detailed model of these LNER wagons for the first time.

An excellent model of the classic 7-plank open coal wagon painted in the LNER goods grey livery, lettered NE.

These 7-plank end door wagons were used in coal and mineral service, the end doors allowing the wagons to be emptied quickly. Built to specifications laid down by the railway companies through the Railways Clearing House (RCH) these wagons used a range of standard parts, allowing them to be repaired at any railway or private repair station. The LMS and LNER used many standard RCH wagons, while the GWR and SR re-designed their standard wagons to use the RCH parts.

This four-wheeled coach is a representation of the many coaches which served on the Isle of Wight Central Railway in the 19th and 20th centuries. Four-wheeled coaches proved especially good at branch line work where their small size enabled the traversing of tight radius curves, whilst lower passenger numbers meant their small size was more acceptable and enabled trains to be hauled by smaller engines.

This first-class coach is modelled with step boards to enable access at stations with low platforms and gas lighting. This model is compatible with our new Maglight system which allows coach lights to be turned on and off using a magnetic wand, removing the need for track pick-ups which increase rolling resistance. This elegant coach features a teak-wood panelling livery, reminiscent of luxury travel, and four doors on each side.

Rapido Trains have chosen to model the late LNER design of LOWMAC low machinery wagon, a design which was built in large numbers for the type for both the LNER and LMS during WW2 and later adopted by British Railways as a standard design. Equipped with vacuum train brakes these LOWMACs were among the very few 'special' wagon types which could run in fast goods trains.
The Rapido Trains model features fine detailing including the lashing rings used to secure the load and brake rigging arranged to allow a NEM coupler pocket to be fitted.
Model finished in LNER bauxite livery as LNER machinery wagon code MAC PV number 260863.
Supplied with removable load of 4 wheelsets in cradles.

One of the most novel features of the 'Coronation' was the inclusion of a specially built streamlined observation car, often affectionately named the 'beaver tail' observation car. Two were built, with one being used for the up service and the other for the down service. Passengers couldn't reserve a seat in the observation car, instead a fee was charged for the use of the carriage by the hour. In reality the streamlined shape of the roof severely limited the views out the back of the carriage. In 1959, long after the 'Coronation' service had ceased, British Railways rebuilt the observation cars with a new un-streamlined end which featured much larger windows and a new seating arrangement to significantly improve the view with the cars being used on the famously picturesque west highlands line.
