LNER Coaches & Wagons

LMER & constituents Eras 2-3

This four wheeled coach is a representation of the many which served on the Great Northern Railway (GNR) in the late 19th and early 20th century. Four wheeled coaches proved especially good at branch line work where their small size enabled the traversing of tight radius curves, whilst lower passenger numbers meant their small size was more acceptable and enabled trains to be hauled by smaller engines.

This GNR coach is modelled as having step boards to enable access at stations with low platforms and gas lighting.

Oxford Rail OR76MW6001B OO Gauge LNER 6 Plank Open Merchandise Wagon LNER Grey

The LNER constructed a slightly larger 6 plank bodied open wagon for general merchandise service, in place of the 5 plank body favoured by LMS and GWR companies. The LNER design used the RCH wood chassis far longer than the other companies who changed to the stronger steel frame design, resulting in the LNER wagons being quite easily identifyable. This model from Oxford Rail provides modellers with a good and detailed model of these LNER wagons for the first time.

An excellent model of the classic 7-plank open coal wagon painted in the LNER goods grey livery, lettered NE.

These 7-plank end door wagons were used in coal and mineral service, the end doors allowing the wagons to be emptied quickly. Built to specifications laid down by the railway companies through the Railways Clearing House (RCH) these wagons used a range of standard parts, allowing them to be repaired at any railway or private repair station. The LMS and LNER used many standard RCH wagons, while the GWR and SR re-designed their standard wagons to use the RCH parts.

A Closed Cover Truck (CCT) was a type of goods van used for transporting goods whilst keeping them protected from the wind and rain. Along with side doors, CCTs also featured opening ends which allowed them to be used to transport motor vehicles as well as parcel traffic. 37ft. 6 in. long vans were initially built by LNER in 1939 and featured three large sliding doors on each side making access extremely easy. The design was successful enough that BR built a further batch of wagons in 1950.

Oxford Rail OR76CAT002B OO Gauge LNER Cattle Wagon Bauxite Finish Lettered NE

A detailed model of the LNER design cattle wagon painted in LNER goods bauxite brown livery.

The LNER was slow to adopt steel underframe, so while the design of the cattle wagon followed the style used by the other four major railway companies the LNER examples continued to use wood underframes. This model reflects these details, along with the solid three-part doors with hand access holes, producing an accurate OO gauge replica of the LNER cattle wagon for the first time.

The GWR iron bodied 'Iron Mink' vans made an excellent base for duties where a strong and secure wagon was required. Many vans of similar design were built by other railways and for private owners by railway wagon works. Regular uses were for flour and cement, which needed to be kept dry during transport and for the secure conveyance of explosives, classified as Gunpowder Vans. Gunpowder vans in particular were frequently given a distinct livery to alert railway staff to the hazardous cargo.
This Rapido Trains Iron Mink model is finished in the white gunpowder van livery of the Great Northern Railway, wagon number 13207.

A new and highly detailed model of the RCH 1907 design open wagon. One of the most common designs used by private wagon owners these wagons frequently carried brightly coloured and floridly lettered liveries applied before WW1. Many thousands of wagons were built to this specification, the vast majority still running into WW2 and passing to British Railways at nationalisation. Each of the Rapido Trains models features prototype specific variations including end doors or no end door, buffer shank design, wheels, brake fittings and V hanger style.
The railway companies often purchased standard RCH coal wagons used to supply additional wagons to customers and to supply their own locomotives. This wagon painted in grey livery and lettered for the Great Central Railway has side and end doors. The number 05057 beginning with a 0 suggests a wagon on hire from the builder, either to cover a short-term demand or in lieu of wagons ordered but still under construction. The zero prefix was added to avoid exactly duplicating any other wagon the company had numbered 5057.

One of the most novel features of the 'Coronation' was the inclusion of a specially built streamlined observation car, often affectionately named the 'beaver tail' observation car. Two were built, with one being used for the up service and the other for the down service. Passengers couldn't reserve a seat in the observation car, instead a fee was charged for the use of the carriage by the hour. In reality the streamlined shape of the roof severely limited the views out the back of the carriage. In 1959, long after the 'Coronation' service had ceased, British Railways rebuilt the observation cars with a new un-streamlined end which featured much larger windows and a new seating arrangement to significantly improve the view with the cars being used on the famously picturesque west highlands line.

With stylings rooted in the rolling stock of the large constituent GNR, many LNER coaches were made from panelled teak giving the coaches a unique appearance. Unlike other coach designs of the same era the LNER did not paint their coaches choosing instead to simply apply wax varnish to the exterior and interior wood resulting in the rich natural tones of the wood shining under any light.
