HO International

Models of locomotives and trains from around the world, including USA/Canada and Europe.

Detailed model of Union Pacific 4000 'Big Boy' class 4-8-8-4 articulated locomotive number 4014 finished UP Steam Heritage form with fuel tender.
The Union Pacific Railroad ordered 25 of these 4-8-8-4 articulated locomotives from the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) to haul the increasingly heavy freight trains over the Sherman Hill route during WW2. While on the shop floor someone chalked 'Big Boy' on the huge new locomotive being assembled. While not the largest, heaviest or most powerful locomotives the UP 4000 class balanced these features with the speed needed for fast freight service.
4014 was reacquired by the Union Pacific in 2015 and restored to service as part of the UP Steam Heritage programme to mark the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad.
With a confounding length of 475mm (almost 19 inches), a 5-pole motor and brass flywheel, a DCC Ready 21-pin plug, handrails made from steel wire and much more, this locomotive is unlike any other and undeniably lines alongside other models as a classic.

HO, short for Half-O, is 1:87  scale, running on 16.5mm gauge track, the same as is used for British HO/OO models). HO is 3.5mm to 1foot, compared to British OO at 1:76 scale, or 4mm to 1ft. Most European and American locos and rolling stock are larger than British equivalents, but because the scale is reduced the models are usually slightly smaller than in OO. European models will normally fit within the clearances used for British OO layouts, however the largest American locomotives and rolling stock may need additional clearance and larger radius curves in the layout.
