Normal HST train formations has 7 or 8 coaches between the two power car locomotives. Typical formations were
Western Region London services (7 coaches) 2 x first class (TFO) - Buffet - 3 x second class (TSO) - second class with guards' office (TGS)
East Coast route (8 coaches) 2 x first class (TFO) - Buffet - 4 x second class (TSO) - second class with guards' office (TGS)
Cross-Country services (7 coaches) 1 x first class (TFO) - Buffet - 4 x second class (TSO) - second class with guards' office (TGS)
Many Western region sets were later extended to 8 coaches in the same formation as the East Coast trains and in recent years First Great Western / Great Western Trains have been increasing the standard class seating available by swapping one of the first class coaches for an additional standard or composite coach with half first and half standard seating.
Even in N gauge a 7-coach formation is over 4-feet long, so some compromise is often necessary! Below you will find additional coaches which will extend your HST trains to the limits your layout can contain.
