The "Vostok" rocket was created by Sergei Pavlovich Korolev in the 1950s. It was based on the military R-7 missile. The new rocket received a third stage, which made it possible to launch manned spacecraft, satellites and the first interplanetary station Luna into orbit. This rocket launched the "Vostok-1" manned spacecraft into Earth orbit on April 12, 1961, with Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin on board. He became the first person to fly in space.
