The first of the Mk.3 design coaches were built for the experimental diesel powered High Speed Train in the mid 1970s. This was successfully developed into the HST train which is still in service today, over 40 years later.
A second style of coach were built later with side buffers and conventional couplings with drophead buckeye couplers for use with locomotives, often in push-pull trains on the West Coast mainline.
