The Mary Rose was a Carrack-type in the Tudor navy of King Henry VIII. After serving for 33 years in several wars against Scotland and Brittany and being rebuilt in 1536, it seems Mary Rose sank due to a manouvering accident while engaging galleys of a French invasion force in the Solent on July 19th 1545.
The wreck was located in 1971, roughly half of the hull surviving in the seabed. An archeological salvage was undertaken, bringing the remaining hull section to the surface in 1982. The hull is displayed today in a purpose-built conservation facility along with extensive displays of the artifacts recovered.
